Primes and Divisibility

  • Set of integers is denoted as Z\mathbb{Z}
  • for a,b∈Za, b \in \mathbb{Z},
    • a divides b is denoted as a∣ba \mid b
    • a does no divides b is denoted as a∤ba \nmid b
  • if a∣ba \mid b then
    • aa is a divisor of bb
    • if a∉1,ba \notin {1, b} then aa is a non trivial divisor or a factor of bb
  • a positive integer p>1p \gt 1 is prime if it has not factors.
  • the greatest common divisor of two integers aa and bb is denoted as gcd(a,b)gcd(a, b) and is the largest cc such that c∣ac \mid a and c∣bc \mid b
  • if pp is prime then gcd(a,p)=1 or pgcd(a, p) = 1 \text{ or } p
  • if gcd(a,b)=1gcd(a, b) = 1 then a,ba, b are said to be co-prime
